PMM: GranaClean Bio provides biodegradable cleaning

GranaClean This portfolio of granulates from Granula Polymer can be used for mechanically and chemically cleaning injection molding machines and extruders. The granulates expand as they’re used, so they can reach into tricky areas of the machine. What’s new? GranaClean Bio, a 100 percent biodegradable product that’s compliant with U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations. Developed specifically for processors of biodegradable polymers such as polylactic acid and polybutylene adipate-terephthalate, it has been available since September. Benefits Effective regular machine maintenance and contaminant removal, and quick material and color changes. According to Granula Polymer, GranaClean Bio represents a first in the market — the biodegradability of the granulates means that processors no longer have to contaminate their machines with non-degradable polymers and then separate the rejects from the cleaning process. GranaClean users can save on plastic that would otherwise be disposed of as scrap, if machines are not properly cleaned out.

Polykemi and Rondo Plast presents the COMPLUS Concept

With the COMPLUS Concept, our customers have multiple choices of plastic compounds to reach optimum solutions, depending on what properties is needed for the different parts. When using the COMPLUS Concept, you can choose the right material with the right properties for each part. – One example within the automotive industry are door panels, being complex assemblies of numerous parts. Each part has an individual demand profile to be fulfilled. Here you can use the materials from the COMPLUS Concept for the different parts, explains project manager Mr. Johan Svenmo. Exchangeable material choices within development work Even if you initially have made a correct material choice for a part, the conditions might still change during a project. On these occasions, there is the unique opportunity to be able to choose another material from the COMPLUS Concept, without having to modify, change or even produce a new mould, which saves both time and costs. – Our new concept gives the customers an incredible flexibility even far into a project, and the choice of materials can be adapted during the development work without the costs increasing dramatically. This ensures that the customer can reach the project’s goals faster and in a safer way, says Johan Svenmo. The first example of the COMPLUS Concept from the POLYfill (PP) and REZYcom (PP) families will be launched soon. Over time, the same concept will also be available for other product families, such as POLYblend (PC/ABS) and SCANAMID (PA).

Polykemi establishes new subsidiary in Mexico

“For many years, we have been supplying Mexican customers with high quality plastic raw materials both from our production facility in Ystad, Sweden, and from our partners in the USA. Now that our new production facility in Gastonia NC, USA is operational, it is a natural step in the globalization of the company to also establish a new Polykemi subsidiary with a sales office in Mexico,” says Mattias Persson, Sales Manager Polykemi AB. Polykemi has employed former partner Fernando González to manage the new sales office, which is located in Mexico City. “With more than 30 years of experience in the local plastics industry, together with a good knowledge of Polykemi’s products, Fernando will be able to provide customers and prospects in Mexico the same high level of service, support and professionalism that always characterizes Polykemi’s way of working,” says Mattias Persson. Polykemi Mexico will work hand in hand with Polykemi Inc. USA and from the new production facility in Gastonia NC, Polykemi will supply the North and South American markets with high quality customized plastic compounds based on both virgin and recycled plastic raw materials. “With the environment in focus, we will continue to help our current customers and future prospects make the very best material choices for their applications. We welcome Fernando González to the Polykemi family and wish him the best of luck,” says Johan Hugoson, CEO of Polykemi Inc. USA. Polykemi celebrates 55 years of continuous development On the very same day that Fernando joined Polykemi, it was exactly 55 years since Mr Hugo Jönsson founded the Polykemi company in Ystad, Sweden. “It’s a very nice coincidence that it was the same day that Fernando started with us. I think grandfather Hugo would have been very proud of how the company has developed since 1968, but without all the great employees it would not have been possible,” concludes Johan Hugoson.

Polykemi Group expanding production in China

      – Our high-quality materials are in strong demand and we are opening up also in central China to be able to serve our customers even faster and better, says Magnus Lindahl, CEO. Since its start in 2005, Polykemi Compounds in Kunshan, outside Shanghai, has improved its standing on the Chinese market. Starting from 2022, Polykemi Group will further strengthen its presence in China and open another production unit in Chongqing, situated 1600 kilometers from Kunshan. Polykemi has already had a sales office over the past decade in Chongqing, in the populous province of Sichuan in central China. The new plant will both reinforce customer relationships and improve our service in the region. – Many of our customers and their suppliers are based in this area, so a production plant in Chongqing ensures that we can keep our delivery times and guarantee the same high quality for both virgin and recycled raw materials, says Magnus Lindahl, CEO of Polykemi Compounds Kunshan. – Furthermore, we can guarantee that customers who have production on multiple continents get the exact same high-quality total concept regardless of whether they have production in Asia, the USA or Europe. Production on three continents in 2022 The new 9,300-square-metre plant (ca. 2.3 acres) will produce compounds based on both virgin and recycled raw materials. It's a conscious strategy, to be geographically close to the customers. – Our founder Hugo Jönsson was personally involved in deciding this the next step of our China vision as early as 2004. The coincidence of our expansion in the investment in the USA underlines our dedication to be a partner in both the East and the West, says Ola Hugoson, CEO and a member of the owner family.

    5. Polykemi helped Separett to reduce their carbon footprint

Polykemi helped Separett to reduce their carbon footprint

Based on a scientific study from 2021, Polykemi Group have developed a calculation tool that the company uses to analyze material choices. It allows them to calculate, together with customers, how they can make even smarter material choices for their products. One company that Polykemi has helped to reduce their carbon footprint is the Swedish family-owned company Separett. They have manufactured water-free toilets for more than 40 years and they focus strongly on sustainability, climate and the environment. By switching from ABS to POLYfill PP HBK1501515 white they save approximately 700 tonnes of CO2 per year, which corresponds to emissions from close to 400 cars during the same period. In addition to the savings made without compromising on function or quality, the chemical and UV resistance actually improved. “Thanks to Polykemi, we made a smart material choice to replace ABS with the crystalline PP-based compound and reduced our CO2 emissions,” says CEO Mikael Billsund.  “This is what we do together with our customers. Our customers get a partner to collaborate with, we make things easier for them and help them reduce their carbon footprint. With our help, they get actual data on how much they have reduced the CO2 emissions of their product by replacing the material,” explains Gustav Hugoson from Polykemi’s sales department. “It is a positive change that doesn’t impact the product’s properties or functionality.” Careful material choices results in major possibilities to save both the climate and resources. Making smart choices when it comes to materials reduces a company’s carbon footprint but also save time and costs. “We provide our customers with documentation that they can present to their end customer. It’s a new way of thinking, both for us, the injection moulders and for the end customer,”  Gustav Hugoson concludes.

    6. Polykemi Inc. begins compounding operations in Southeast USA

Polykemi Inc. begins compounding operations in Southeast USA

“This is Polykemi Group’s largest single investment ever and the interest from the US market is very high,” says Johan Hugoson, CEO Polykemi Inc. Polykemi Inc. is the fully-owned American subsidiary of Swedish plastic compounder Polykemi AB. The company has been represented in the US market since 2013 and after ten years of growth will now open its own manufacturing plant in Gastonia, just outside Charlotte, North Carolina. “This lays the foundation for Polykemi Group to grow further on the North American continent and it is great that the time has come to really start up the operations,” says Johan Hugoson. Polykemi Group has invested around 18 million euros in the new facility and will employ around 20 employees in the first year. Polykemi Inc. are launching operations with 6500 tons of capacity on two twin-extrusion lines (92 mm and 75 mm, respectively), and room for immediate expansion. Now that Polykemi Group has its own production in the USA, it will produce the same plastic compounds in North America that it currently supplies in Asia and Europe, ensuring that its global customers can receive corresponding materials with the same performance quality, regardless of where they are produced. “We guarantee customers the same high quality of customized plastic compounds based on both virgin and recycled plastic raw materials delivered from all of our global factories,” says Johan Hugoson. Polykemi Group has been successfully manufacturing customer adapted plastic compounds for 55 years. Thanks to a solid experience and continuous development, the company is able to help customers optimize material choices for their products. “We recommend Material-Smart choices, which means materials of the highest quality, with optimal cost efficiency and with the lowest possible environmental impact, without compromising on function or quality,” says Johan Hugoson.

    7. Post-consumer recyclates for the automotive industry

Post-consumer recyclates for the automotive industry

WIS Kunststoffe, Breitungen, has been involved in professional plastics recycling for over 25 years and has increasingly focussed on high-quality applications in recent years. Processors are now increasingly focussing on the CO2 footprint of plastic products. "This can be reduced particularly efficiently through the use of post-consumer recyclates (PCR)," emphasises authorised signatory Daniel Römhild. "We can also offer our customers a CO2 calculation to clearly show the savings when using recyclates compared to virgin materials." However, processing and ensuring consistently high material quality is anything but trivial. This is particularly true for recompounds that are fed from the post-consumer material stream. While post-industrial goods are usually available unmixed and without impurities, post-consumer waste, for example from the Yellow Bag or other material streams, must first be sorted and washed at great expense before it can be recompounded.Investing in more sustainability Römhild explains: "We have invested extensively in our machinery and our analysis laboratory in recent years and now also produce PCR-based recompounds with guaranteed properties for the automotive industry. The energy required for this is generated 100% sustainably by the recently installed in-house photovoltaic system. The knowledge we have gained over many years about high-quality products in other sectors, such as cosmetics, household, gardening and other technical applications, has helped in the development of this new product range. With our materials, processors can simultaneously achieve the recyclate quota required by regulations and be sure that they are processing a material that fulfils the agreed specifications at all times."

    9. Precigrip assembly boy

      Precigrip assembly boy

Building grippers doesn't have to be complicated - with the Montageboy and the PreciGrip modular gripper system, building grippers is child's play. This innovative combination enables practical, efficient implementation and forms the simulation environment for the interaction of handling, gripper, injection mould and injection moulding machine. The Montageboy provides a stable base: the component to be handled is clamped on the fixed side. The gripper can be mounted directly on the component on the moving side. The moving unit can be moved precisely to the component using an integrated guide system. A gripper changing system ensures that the gripper base plate is seamlessly integrated both in the assembly boy and later in the handling system of the injection moulding machine. The gripper base plate forms the centrepiece of the gripper assembly. The PreciGrip profiles are securely fastened to it using cross or parallel connectors. Individual AGS actuators can then be flexibly attached to the profile frame: - Vacuum cups for easy handling of smooth or grained surfaces, - Gripper fingers for gripping behind components when the suction gripping force is not sufficient, - Gripping tongs for targeted gripping of sprues or delicate component areas, - Parallel grippers for centric gripping of metal inserts, - Inner bellows grippers for gripping in bores, - Textile grippers for handling flexible parts, - Sprue cutters for cutting sprues, - part checks for monitoring the presence of components or inserts. All these components can be flexibly attached to the profiles using versatile gripper arms and clamping pieces. This allows the actuators to be positioned exactly where they are needed on the component. The result: a customised gripper that is optimally adapted to the requirements of the respective handling process.
