    2. The Future of Digital Design

      The Future of Digital Design

SKF Seals is a division of SKF that operates in the market for industrial and automotive seals. Some time ago, a digitalization project was launched in this division, for which all machines are connected, digitalized and visualized in such a way that it makes sense for the companies and creates added value. In this case, this means that every machine has a status and displays production data in order to keep the plant, and therfore the entire operation, running at all locations. The first step is to record where each plant stands in terms of digitalization. This means checking which systems are available and whether there is already an infrastructure or what the connectivity is like there. In addition, the specific requirements are defined in order to obtain secure data. So the question is what SKF is doing with big data and what it will ultimately achieve. It used to be the case that there was no more machine data after commissioning. There was no information available as to whether the machine was running or not. The big question was: when you bring machine systems to the various locations, how do you get feedback on whether they are running or not? After all, the process doesn't end after installation, because that's when process development really begins. It takes a while until the goal is reached and a check is possible so that the project can be finally handed over. In this phase, there was a lack of reliable data on how the machine was running. A solution was found in the Mould Monitoring cloud software by Digital Moulds. After the initial discussions, a pilot project was quickly set up. The first devices were initially installed in the live version at low cost. In addition, a system with motion detectors was designed to see whether data was being transmitted at all. The installation was initially carried out on machines in Leverkusen so that experience could be gained.

    3. The Ultimate GRAVIMIX Track Test!

      The Ultimate GRAVIMIX Track Test!

The Ultimate GRAVIMIX Track Test! Yes, we mounted a GRAVIMIX on the roof of our race car. Not as a stunt, but to prove something important. Our batch blenders are engineered to stay extremely accurate, even under heavy vibration and movement. Strong enough to be installed directly on the inlet of any injection moulding machine. This is something most alternatives simply can’t handle. The GRAVIMIX works differently: Large batches. Longer measuring time. Hardly any variation between shots. Which means consistent dosing, stable production and significant cost savings that often remain unnoticed until you measure them. So instead of explaining it in a brochure… we decided to demonstrate it in the real world. On a cold morning. On a live racetrack. Under vibration, wind and speed that no injection moulding machine can simulate. And yes: the GRAVIMIX stayed accurate. Watch the video on our YouTube Channel. 3 fun minutes of your time, decades of savings on your Masterbatch!

    6. UL-certified heating elements

Ihne & Tesch has been producing and supplying reliable CSA-certified heating elements for many years. Now it is going one step further – the group can now offer heating elements that comply with UL certification requirements (for both Canada and the USA). CSA and UL certifications are a key quality feature for manufacturers in the plastics processing industry, proving that heating elements fulfill the relevant safety and quality standards. Ihne & Tesch has now expanded its production processes accordingly and can therefore offer heating elements that are UL-approved and bear the UL logo. These options make it easier to comply with legal requirements. “Our UL-certified heating elements offer our customers maximum safety and compliance with the regulatory requirements of the North American market,” explains Abderahmane Ouhbi, Head of Sales. “By marking the UL logo directly on the heating element, our customers can visualize the certification.” UL certifications are currently available for various product groups. The portfolio includes, for example, band heaters (types KHK, M, and ZAK), heating/cooling combinations (type HAK), and flat or frame-shaped tool heaters (type FAK) for demanding applications in the plastics industry. The company is already working on further approvals for other product groups (e.g., nozzle heating tapes, type DAK) to continuously expand its range.

We have now started production in our second factory in China

Since 2005, Polykemi Compounds Kunshan, outside Shanghai, has had a strong presence on the Chinese market. From 2015, sister companies Scanfill AB and Rondo Plast AB also produce in Kunshan. Polykemi Group is now furtherly expanding by opening their second factory in China. The 9300 m2 manufacturing unit in Chongqing is now producing the same high quality materials as at the other production facilities in Europe and the USA. “It is one of the most growing regions in the country, with major universities and centers for both manufacturing and research. Many of our customers and their subcontractors are located in the area and thanks to the new manufacturing unit we can provide all our customers with even better service,” explains Magnus Lindahl, CEO of Polykemi Compounds Kunshan and Chongqing. In the new plant, Polykemi has initially installed two compounding lines and they mostly produce compounds based on PP, PA6, PA66, PC and PC/ABS. “Based on the mix of material types and the predicted order volumes, we expect the capacity of the two machine lines to be between 4,500 and 5,000 tonnes per year,” says Magnus Lindahl. Chongqing is located near the populous Sichuan province in central China. A large part of the country’s automotive industry is located there, as well as a significant part of the manufacturing industry for park, snow and garden products. An establishment in the city also opens up opportunities for further expansion towards the provincial capital of Chengdu and the south-eastern parts of China. “The interest in high quality recycled materials is growing in China, which combined with our virgin plastic compounds gives us a unique position in the market. We have the knowledge of how these materials can be combined for the best results, both in terms of quality and the increasing demands for sustainability that exist today,” says Magnus Lindahl.
